Traces in the Landscape

Västerbotten is a large county with a varied landscape that stretches from the coast to the mountains. In every age, mankind has left traces in the landscape, traces that can tell us about our history. The landscape that has been changed by man – the cultural landscape – is all around us. Even the mountains, which are sometimes called “our last wilderness”, are part of the cultural landscape; in some places there are abundant traces of the people who once lived there.

Our surroundings are continually changing; remains are reshaped or disappear and new ones are formed. For example, Sweden’s open agricultural landscape, which many people see as a natural element of our surroundings, has a fairly short history in this region.
The landscape can be divided into three parts – coast, inland and the mountains
